Annual Course Completion Requirement

Candidates are required to complete at least one university course per year (CPY). This single course may be one of the curriculum requirements for either the CRA or the AACI, P.App designations, or a course leading to the completion of a required a 4-year undergraduate degree (120 credits) in any subject. College courses or any other organization’s course that UBC has accepted as formally equivalent to one of AIC’s requirements would be accepted. AIC reserves the right to request proof of course equivalency being granted by the University of British Columbia.

In order to help determine if the course you are considering will meet AIC’s CPY criteria, ensure that the course meets the following minimum requirements;

  • Be offered by a recognized university or college in Canada.
  • Count toward a 4-year undergraduate degree or masters degree.
  • Is of a length consistent with a one semester university course, that is, approximately 13 weeks in length and have 30 contact (classroom) hours, or 120 study hours (reading, assignment/project preparation, exam preparation) if a distance course.
  • Is of sufficient depth, breadth and rigor to meet recognized university or college 4-year undergraduate or masters degree requirements.
  • Has a formal assessment mechanism including proctored mid-term examinations, final examinations or independently completed case studies.

All courses must meet these minimum requirements. If your course does not meet one or more of these requirements, then you should consider seeking pre-approval from AIC of that course prior to enrolling to ensure that it is eligible for CPY acceptance. Requests for CPY approval typically must be supported by detailed course outlines showing topics covered, study materials used, and assessment mechanisms.

Courses offered by professional associations do not typically meet AIC’s CPY requirement. Examples of course providers whose courses do not meet CPY requirements are:

  • IRWA - International Right of Way Association
  • CCIM – Certified Commercial Investment Member
  • BCREA – British Columbia Real Estate Association
