Professional Practice Seminar (PPS)

AIC Members must complete the Professional Practice Seminar (PPS) and earn discretionary professional development credits in accordance with the AIC’s mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program. Please note that, effective January 1, 2026, completion of the PPS will no longer qualify for CPD.

MODULE 1 – CUSPAP & AIC POLICY UPDATES

📌 Goal: To align with the effective date of the 2026 Canadian Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (CUSPAP), this module ensures Members understand updates to CUSPAP and AIC policies.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Revisions to AIC policies and how they affect your practice
  • Key updates to the 2026 CUSPAP
  • Guidance on applying updated standards with confidence

Availability: January 2026

Completion Deadline: April 15, 2026

Format:

  • 10-question multiple-choice quiz completed after viewing
  • The recorded presentation is approximately 120 minutes long

MODULE 2 – INSURANCE AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

📌 Goal: Strengthen knowledge of professional liability insurance and reinforce best practices.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Essential insights into AIC Professional Liability Insurance Program
  • Best practices for reducing risk and ensuring compliance
  • Practical strategies to support consistent, high-quality appraisal work

Availability: January 2027

Completion Deadline: March 31, 2027

Format:

  • The recorded presentation will be approximately 90 minutes long
  • 10-question multiple-choice quiz completed after viewing

BOTH MODULES

  • Available on UBC Learning Platform in French and English
  • Fee per module is $172.50 + tax

ASSESSMENTS

To improve your learning experience and engagement throughout, each module will include:

  • Embedded knowledge checks throughout each module
  • A short, mandatory 10-question multiple-choice quiz at the end
  • New passing grade: 70% (up from 60%)
  • Assessment Outcome: If a Member does not achieve the 70% minimum passing grade, they will simply be required to retake the assessment until they pass. A reattempt fee will apply. This does not affect membership status or designation.

WHY THE CHANGE

In accordance with AIC’s governance practices, the change to the minimum passing grade for the PPS modules was formally considered and approved by the AIC Board of Directors at its meeting on August 20, 2025.

This change, made in consultation with AIC’s education partner, the University of British Columbia (UBC), and recommended by the member-led Professional Practice Committee (PPC), better reflects the standards expected of the profession, encourages deeper engagement with the material, and supports consistent, high-quality practice across AIC membership.

These benefits strengthen public trust and reinforce Members’ professional credibility.

QUIZ COMPLETION

Retake Process, Timing, and Fees

The quiz confirms retention and comprehension of key updates to CUSPAP 2026 and AIC policies. Questions are fact-based; there are no critical-thinking questions.

There is no limit on retakes — Members may retake the module quiz as many times as needed to achieve the passing grade of 70%. Most Members pass on the first attempt.

Retakes do not affect membership standing, trigger a Professional Practice Review, or carry disciplinary consequences before the applicable deadline.

However, if a Member does not successfully complete the PPS by the deadline of April 15, 2026 for 2026 and March 31, 2027 for 2027, in accordance with the CPD Policy:

  • A $500 fine is applied, and
  • The Member is suspended until the PPS is successfully completed and the fine is paid.

Once the PPS is completed, the suspension is lifted, and the Member returns to good standing.

There is no official waiting period between attempts, although UBC may require a short administrative processing time of up to one business day between attempts. In most instances, Members should be able to retake the quiz the same day.

Each retake carries a $25 fee.

MEMBER STANDING

Members remain in good standing and may continue to practice while completing or retaking the PPS.

HOWEVER: All attempts, including retakes, must be completed by April 15, 2026 for 2026 and March 31, 2027 for 2027. After that date, suspension and fine provisions under the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) policy apply.

UBC maintains its own secure testing platform and records attempts confidentially.

AIC receives confirmation of successful completion, if authorized by the Member.

Failed attempts are neither recorded on AIC’s Member or CPD records nor disclosed publicly. Suspension for non-compliance may be noted on AIC’s website in accordance with CPD policy.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR DOCUMENTED DISABILITIES

Accommodations are available for Members with documented disabilities or other conditions that affect testing.

UBC’s Centre for Accessibility provides professional support for all UBC-administered assessments, including the PPS quiz.

THROUGH AIC

Members may also request accommodations directly through the AIC National Office. Members are encouraged to reach out early by emailing [email protected]. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

AIC 102: INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Completion of the AIC 102: Introduction to Professional Practice, is a prerequisite for applying for membership as a Candidate of the AIC.

Individuals seeking to join the AIC as Candidate Members must complete the AIC 102: Introduction to Professional Practice Seminar before submitting their application for Candidacy.
