TYLER BEATTY AWARD FOR RISING STARS

Since 2016, the Tyler Beatty Award for Rising Stars has recognized exceptional Professional Appraisers (P. App.) who have achieved significant accomplishments in their career and who have made noteworthy contributions to the appraisal profession as a whole. 

In 2022, the award (formerly known as the Top Appraisers Under 40 Award) was renamed in honour of Tyler Beatty P. App., AACI, who passed away in March of that year. Tyler was an exemplary volunteer with the AIC and a very successful appraisal professional.  

He is remembered as a tireless volunteer that served the AIC in countless roles. Tyler was active at a provincial level – both in British Columbia and Alberta – and on the national level. Among his many contributions, Tyler served as National Conference Chair, as a member of the Standards Sub Committee, and as a long-time member of the Admissions and Accreditation Committee. Tyler was also a key contributor to the development of the Mass Appraisal Standard, among others. Fittingly, in 2017, Tyler’s own achievements were recognized with this award. 

  1. There will be no hard cap on the number of award recipients chosen each year, and recipients will not be selected based on their gender. 
  1. Recipients will be selected based on their number of years of experience as an AIC Professional Appraiser (i.e. 10 years or less as a designated Member). See “Eligibility” below. 
  1. The award has officially been renamed the Tyler Beatty Award for Rising Stars. 

As always, the intention of the award remains the same: to celebrate and encourage excellence in professional appraisal.  

Application/nomination process and criteria

ELIGIBILITY

An eligible applicant/nominee for the Tyler Beatty Award:

  • Must be an AIC-designated Member for 10 years or less as of December 31.
  • Must be a Member in good standing with Appraisal Institute of Canada 
  • Must not currently hold a seat on the AIC National Board of Directors 
  • Must not be a previous recipient of the Tyler Beatty Award (formerly the Top Appraisers Under 40 Award) 
AWARD OFFERINGS

Recipients of the Tyler Beatty Award for Rising Stars will receive the following:  

  • A crystal award trophy 
  • A JPEG file of the award logo for use in email signature, business cards, marketing collateral, etc. 
  • One complimentary pass to attend the AIC National Conference 
  • A formal presentation of the award at AIC National Conference 
  • A feature in the CPV Magazine
APPLICATION/NOMINATION PROCESS

STEP 1 – Complete the application form

Please note: Any AIC-designated Professional Appraiser (P. App.) can submit their own application or nominate a fellow Member. All applications must be submitted using the Application Form provided below; applications which do not use the form will be disqualified.

Each submission must demonstrate the applicant/nominee’s contributions to professional appraisal, as well as outstanding achievements in the following areas:

  • Career accomplishments: Demonstrated achievement of excellence within career and/or education.
  • Service and contributions to the AIC:
    • Involvement in regional, chapter, provincial, or national committees, events, education, or initiatives;
    • Representation of the AIC within other professional bodies/business-related organizations; or
    • Promotion of the profession.
  • Other contributions to the valuation profession: Including adding knowledge to the field, contributing to other organizations or associations for the advancement of the valuation profession, and/or promoting/championing the valuation profession.
  • Community service: Any type of community involvement regarding the appraisal profession.
  • Other accomplishments: Demonstrated accomplishments that illustrate leadership, innovation, creativity, commitment, or impact.
  • Overcoming adversity: Demonstrated ability to overcome difficult situations or circumstances to excel despite barriers.

STEP 2 – Complete the application form by end of day February 28.

STEP 3 – The AIC Communications Committee will review all applications and make recommendations to the AIC Board of Directors. 

STEP 4 – The award recipients will be approved by the AIC Board of Directors, announced in the CPV Magazine, and honoured at the AIC National Conference. 

2026 Recipient

Dexter Dong, P. App., AACI

British Columbia

Dexteris now a Senior Property Negotiator with Metro Vancouver; he recently changed his career to local government, which is contributing to services and solutions for a liveable Greater Vancouver region. He has received strong support on this path from internal colleagues which several are also AIC members.

Prior to joining Metro Vancouver, Dexter worked with Musqueam Capital Corporation, the economic development arm of the Musqueam Indian Band. In this role, he was involved in on-reserve and off-reserve valuations, investment due diligence, strategic asset management, project financing, and funding. His work supported the development and stewardship of Musqueam’s land base and real estate holdings.

Dexter is actively engaged in the appraisal profession and broader community. He has presented at the AIC National Conference in Montreal and at various Indigenous-focused events, sharing insights on Indigenous valuation practices and First Nation land development. He is committed to advancing Indigenous and affordable housing initiatives, serving as Board Treasurer for Hwul’a’mut Housing Society (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) and as a Board Member for Kiwassa Neighbourhood House.

He is also dedicated to supporting newcomers and promoting diversity and inclusion, serving as a mentor with the BC Immigrant Employment Council and as a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Advisory Committee with the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade.

Dexter is the AIC-BC Vancouver Chapter Candidate Representative from 2021 to 2023. Since 2022, he has actively volunteered with the Member Experience and Education Committee, organizing monthly “Lunch and Learn” webinars to support professional development and knowledge sharing among members. He has also participated in multiple outreach initiatives, promoting the appraisal profession to students through events with the UBC Real Estate Club and Langara College.

As a professional appraiser and this year’s Rising Star award recipient, Dexter is at the beginning of a promising career and looks forward to continued achievements ahead.
