To order, please complete a Seal for Designation Order Form and return it with payment to the national office. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.
Appraisers are increasingly using new technologies in their daily work and the documents they produce remain subject to high standards of reliability. Appraisers who wish to produce legally reliable digital document in compliance with AIC’s requirements, now converge to digitally sign their documents.
To this end, AIC has acquired a digital signature supplied by its sole provider, Notarius. Here is what appraisers must know and understand:
- What is an electronic document? An electronic document is a document carried by electronic, logical and visual media.
- What is a digital signature? It is the affixing of a digital signature certificate to an electronic document.
- What is a digital signature certificate? It is a computer artefact issued and cryptographically protected by a Certification Authority (Notarius) attesting to the veracity of the information declared in the certificate. This information may include:
- Full name
- AIC Membership number
- Email address
- Public Key
- Validity period and the serial number of their certificate.
Through its partnership with AIC, Notarius issues digital signatures enabling an appraiser to digitally sign an electronic document that they finalize in an authentic, legally reliable and approved manner by AIC.
Features and Benefits
The digital signature affixed to a document by an appraiser:
- Guarantees the origin of the document. The origin of the document includes proof of the identity of the signer, signer AIC’s professional affiliation (at the time of the signature) as well as the date and time when the document’s finalization;
- Ensures the integrity of the document (as well as it’s data contents), so that the document has not been altered since its completion;
- Establishes the authenticity of the document. The authenticity implies that everything that is necessary to prove its origin and integrity is embedded in the document;
- Ensures the longevity of the document. Longevity provides the ability to open, read, authenticate and preserve the reliability of a document over time, or any period exceeding about twelve years (rule of thumb).
