The Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) is a self-regulated designating body, and has established a standards-based Professional Practice model that is responsive, transparent and accountable to the public and AIC members alike.

The Institute employs a Counsellor of Professional Practice. The Counsellor of Professional Practice is the first point of contact and as such is dedicated to serving the public interest by responding to various types of queries. In this regard, the Counsellor registers consumer concerns and complaints related to the services of an AIC member with the assurance of confidentiality and expedient action. The Counsellor provides expert advice on the application of the Canadian Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice to members of the Institute as an educational service.

The Institute’s professional practice process includes three disciplinary committees, appointed by the Board of Directors that carries out investigation, adjudication, and appeal hearings for the most serious breaches in the Standards and Code of Ethics.

Should you have a concern about the work product or the conduct of a member of the Institute, you can contact the AIC’s Counsellor of Professional Practice to discuss the matter. Subsequent to your discussion with the Counsellor, should you wish to file a complaint, you may do so in writing and addressed to the Counsellor. The Institute focuses its investigation and adjudication on formal complaints where it is alleged that a member has contravened the Canadian Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.

The AIC has adopted the Rules and Protocols of Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Canada (www.adrcanada.ca) when disputes are referred to Mediation.
