As a Senior Assessor, you will act as the highest-level subject matter expert in the realm of property tax assessment at The City of Calgary and will also act as an informal leader and mentor on your team. The role is an exciting and dynamic one and will expose you to high-level communication with property owners and industry professionals. You will also coordinate the valuation of a large group of properties as a team and help to facilitate tactics to best maintain a stable assessment base. You will manage and work on exciting and innovative projects designed to arrive at a more effective and efficient assessment product.

Primary duties include:
• Communicate in a constructive manner and develop relationships with team members, other City employees and external customers.
• Value complex properties through mass appraisal and help coordinate mass valuation with team members.
• Maintain an inventory of complex properties and work to ensure the assessed values represent market value or the appropriate valuation standard.
• Provide technical expertise and mentorship to colleagues in valuing properties and communicating well with our customers and internal/external partners.
• Engage in constructive dialogue with property owners and their representatives. This involves calculated negotiation and building and managing relationships.
• Understand and work within the legislative framework of property tax assessment in Alberta.
• Strategically develop tactics to ensure stability of the assessments through proactive discussions with owners and defense of the assessments.
• Represent The City with professionalism and integrity at the Assessment Review Board (ARB). The ARB is a formal quasi-judicial board and the proceedings can be adversarial in nature. Help to mentor team members on effective presentation skills at hearings.
• Lead or be involved with projects designed to enhance the business operations of The City.
• Provide relief for section Leader when required.

Qualifications
• A degree in Real Estate, Commerce, Business, Economics, or a related discipline.
• A certificate in Real Property Assessment or equivalent.
• A professional designation in assessment or appraisal being one of Accredited Municipal Assessor of Alberta (AMAA), Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute (AACI) or Certified Assessment Evaluator (CAE).
• At least 5 years of experience in assessment or appraisal including experience in valuing a wide variety of property types.
• A valid Class 5 Driver\’s License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.
• Preference will be given to applicants with a diploma in Urban Land Economics.
• You have strong communication, problem solving and decision-making skills, and are excellent at planning and organizing.
• Well-developed teamwork and collaboration skills along with a solid track record of customer service and customer focus.

Workstyle
• This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Compensation: Pay Grade 15 $54.36 – 72.73 per hour
