Professional development is an important step to enhance your career and professional growth. AIC-BC, in partnership with the Appraisal Institute of Canada, offers conferences, professional practice seminars, courses, seminars, webinars, and other events to help Members stay leading edge within the valuation profession and real estate sector.
AIC-BC is committed to delivering programs and services to its Members. AIC-BC Committees and Chapters hope to plan and offer an array of virtual webinars and in-person events each year. AIC-BC EVENT CANCELLATION POLICY
In-person events organized by the Provincial Association often include venue cancellation
fees or other fees associated with cancellations by registrants. For events where
registrants pay a fee to attend, a cancellation fee may be applied.
~ Registrants who cancel more than seven (7) days prior to an event will be subject to
a $75.00 administration fee.
~ Registrants who cancel within seven (7) days of the event will not be entitled to a
refund.
~ Enrolment that does not meet minimums for cost recovery may result in
cancellation of the event. In this case, registrants will receive a full refund.
Every effort will be made to handle each case fairly. Members who have registered for an event and are unable to attend will be encouraged to find an alternate AIC-BC Member to assign to their registration, if appropriate.
In the event of cancellation by AIC-BC, registrants will receive a full refund.
Professional Practice Seminar – On Demand
The online and on-demand Professional Practice Seminar is offered through the UBC education platform.
Modules can be viewed anytime to suit the member’s schedule and at the end of each Module, the participant will complete a 10 multiple-choice questions quiz.

AIC 102 – Introduction to Professional Practice Seminar – For New Candidate Members
Eligibility: Any individual interested in becoming a Candidate Member of the Appraisal Institute of Canada. More information on the ITPP can be found here.
There are currently no classroom Professional Practice Seminars scheduled in BC.
AIC-BC offers seminars and webinars that provide quality opportunities for Association Members to meet their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
CPD Credits: Registrants must attend the full session to be eligible for credit. The list of attendees will be verified by AIC-BC and forwarded to AIC National for posting of credits to Member’s individual records. Please allow 30 days for posting of credits to your CPD record.
Recordings: Event recording will only be made available to registered attendees following the Virtual Event. AIC-BC Members will not be permitted to purchase recorded material.
NOTE: AIC’S CPD Policy does not permit credit through recorded CPD events. Accordingly, CPD credits will only be awarded to attendees of the Virtual Event. No credits will be awarded for viewing event recordings.

Gain clarity on what defines a heritage property, explore key building designations, and understand how uniform standards and appraisal practices are applied in heritage conservation and valuation.

Orville is celebrating his Golden Anniversary as a member of the Appraisal Institute of Canada. He is accredited with AACI, P.App.(retired). He is also a long-time Professional member [RI(BC)(retired)] of the Real Estate Institute of B.C.
He had beenprivileged to have had the opportunity to appraise most of all types of properties,from Sunshine Coast to Downtown Vancouver – including notable Heritage Hotels, HistoricAreas Chinatown, Gastown and Yaletown. He also was the lone Property Assessment Analyst at B.C. Hydro with a portfolio of approximately 4,500 assessment folios.
Upon early retirement, Orville lead and worked, Pro Bono, on the conservation project of the 1903 Chinese Empire Reform Association (C.E.R.A.) headquarters in the National Historic Site Vancouver Chinatown, the 1st of only 2 known C.E.R.A. buildings in Canada. He felt proud and rewarded by both the Heritage Conservation Award from Heritage BC and the Award of Honour from the City of Vancouver in 2019.
Orville previously served 7½ years as the Appraisal Institute of Canada Professional Practice Advocate. As well, he served on the Chinatown Historic Area Planning Committee and the Vancouver Heritage Commission. He currently serves as a Director on the Heritage BC Board, a Subject Matter Expert for the AIC-B.C. Association and a member of the Organizing Committee in the Vancouver Chapter.
11:00pm – 12:00pm – How Current BC Residential Tenancy Legislation Impacts Landlords, Tenants, and (Potentially) Property Values
The Residential Tenancy Act (RTA) governs the legal agreement between a landlord and tenant for the use of residential property in BC. This session will provide a broad overview of the RTA, its Policies and Regulations. Topics covered in this session will include the arbitration dispute process, rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, and how policies such as the City of Vancouver’s Tenant Relocation and Protection Policy (TRPP) may affect property values.

Charlotte Ciok has over 35 years’ experience in the real estate industry in British Columbia in various capacities and has held professional designations with the Canadian Society of Association Executives, The Appraisal Institute of Canada, The Real Estate Institute of Canada and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. Charlotte specializes in negotiations, meditation and arbitration under the Residential Tenancy Act.
Charlotte holds a Bachelor of General Studies Degree with a minor in Financial Management from Simon Fraser University and an Urban Land Economics Diploma (Appraisal Option) from UBC’s Sauder School of Business. Other education includes completed include interest-based Conflict Resolution and Negotiations courses from the BC Justice Institute.
Donald J MacPherson
Principal, DJ Mac Consulting
Don MacPherson is a retired police officer with thirty years’ experience in the management, education, and investigative fields of policing. Don specializes in negotiations, mediation and arbitration under the Residential Tenancy Act. Don holds a Bachelor of General Studies Degree with a minor in Sociology from Simon Fraser University and has completed numerous courses from the B.C. Justice Institute in Conflict Resolution and Negotiations.
Kaarina Bishop, Lawyer
Everyone Legal Clinic.
Kaarina Bishop is a lawyer with extensive experience in residential tenancy and administrative law. She runs her own solo practice and also works as a staff lawyer at a leading non-profit, where she manages multiple programs, including the Residential Tenancy Program. In addition, Kaarina holds a management role in a remote legal clinic, where she teaches and supervises articling students, and she also serves as a supervising lawyer for a law school pro bono legal advice clinic. Across these roles, Kaarina has assessed and advised on hundreds of tenancy disputes and judicial review petitions arising from Residential Tenancy Branch decisions.
Kaarina holds a diploma in Biotechnology from BCIT, a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia, and a Juris Doctor from UBC’s Allard School of Law, with a specialization in Law and Social Justice. She is also a Law Society of BC–accredited mediator.
Her combined legal and academic background allows her to bring both a practical and principled approach to landlord-tenant issues.

Join three appraisal professionals as they explore the practical applications, opportunities, and challenges of artificial intelligence across different sectors of the valuation profession. This panel presentation brings together perspectives from residential, commercial/agricultural, and municipal assessment practices to provide a comprehensive view of AI’s role in modern appraisal work.
This session focuses specifically on appraisal and assessment applications rather than general AI topics, providing actionable insights for practitioners looking to responsibly integrate these emerging technologies into their professional practice while maintaining the critical thinking and verification standards essential to credible valuation work.

He’s involved in developing R Shiny tools aligned with Evidence-Based Valuation and, through the Community of Asset Analysts, works to strengthen the appraisal community by sharing transparent, bias-aware AI usage practice and reproducible methodology.
Lloyd Funk, CAE, AAM
Municipal Assessor, Province of Manitoba
Lloyd Funk, CAE, AAM, is the Provincial Municipal Assessor for the Province of Manitoba, leading an innovative team that is exploring opportunities to harness data science in the delivery of property assessment services to 136 municipalities with over 447,000 properties. Lloyd currently serves on the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) Board of Directors and recently chaired the IAAO’s CAE master exam review task force.
Jason M. Schellenberg, P. App, AACI, PGCV, B. Comm.(Hons.)
Partner – Red River Group
Jason is an AACI-designated fee appraiser and partner with Red River Group in Manitoba, specializing in commercial and agricultural valuations across the province, including serving as an expert witness before tribunals and courts. Jason has served as president of AIC-Manitoba (2018-2020) and is a member of the AIC National Peer Review Committee. He is an active participant in the George Dell Community of Asset Analysts (CAA), where he enjoys exploring data science-based approaches through learning and promoting Evidence Based Valuation (EBV). Jason resides in Niverville, MB with his wife and two teenage sons. When not appraising or exploring new technologies, he enjoys sports and is actively involved in his local church community.
